Conceptualizing Nature in Eastern Mediterranean Cultures of the Second-First Millennia BCE: The Use of Textual and Pictorial Evidence
This Emory-TAU colloquium promotes an interdisciplinary conversation around a set of questions shared by Hebrew Bible scholars and scholars of other ancient Near Eastern and East Mediterranean cultures of the second and first millennia BCE. Did these ancient cultures have conceptions of nature? If so, how can we decipher such conceptions of nature in pictorial and literary sources? And further, how do the conceptions of nature in the Hebrew Bible compare with those in its cultural milieu? Sessions will be held in the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History at Tel Aviv University and are free to join. Alternatively, sessions may be joined via Zoom.

Salo W. and Jeannette M. Baron Awards for Scholarly Excellence in Research of the Jewish Experience
Emanuel Tov will receive the second Salo W. and Jeannette M. Baron Award for Scholarly Excellence in Research on the Jewish Experience. Founded in 2020 by the Salo W. and Jeannette M. Baron Foundation / The Knapp Family Foundation and the University of Vienna, the Baron Award is presented biannually to a recognised scholar for a body of work. Awards will also be presented to two postgraduate students for an individual work representing the highest scholarly achievement. A festive lecture by Emanuel Tov will follow the award ceremony. The event will be hosted via Zoom.

Epistemology of the Ancient Fertile Crescent
Reflection on knowledge is often assumed to origin in the formation of Greek philosophy since pre-Socratic times. Based on this insight, earlier cultural stages in the ancient Near East, including ancient Israel, are described as archaic. Against this view, new approaches to the study of epistemologies in these cultures have emerged in the recent years. The aim of the conference “Epistemology of the Ancient Fertile Crescent” is to bring these new approaches into dialogue to create a concise picture of epistemological processes in the cultures of this region.

The Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense is an annual international conference on biblical studies jointly organised by the theological faculties of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the Université Catholique de Louvain. This online conference will analyze how digital culture has changed the perceptions of writing styles in papyri. Studies conducted by modern scholars have always been the main way of evaluating papyri, determining their dates and content. We will evaluate the current ways scholars view the aesthetics of papyri in a world where close and distant readings are intersecting more every day. Orality and Literacy in the Ancient World CFP Closes
The Fifteenth Conference on Orality and Literacy in the Ancient World will take place in Ada, Ohio (US) from June 26–30, 2024. The theme for the conference is “Special Grammar.” Albert Lord used the phrase “special grammar” to refer to the verbal art used by South Slavic guslari, Homeric bards, and other performers of oral traditions and he asserted that this special grammar was an adaptation of practices in everyday conversation (Lord, Singer of Tales, 35-36). Papers in response to this theme are invited on topics related to the ancient Mediterranean world or, for comparative purposes, other times, places, and cultures. Papers should be 20 minutes in length. Anonymous abstracts of up to 350 words (not including bibliography) should be submitted as Word files by 31 December 2023.
